7 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming A Vegetarian

Hi love! Over a year ago (actually a year and a month) I decided to switch to a vegetarian diet which means that I don't eat meat at all. No gelatin in gummies, no fish or products that in any way contain the meat, bones or whatever from an animal. I do eat eggs, cheese and drink milk in small portions but before taking this decision there were a few things I would have liked to have known and I think that you should if you think about going vegetarian or vegan.


Hej elskede! For over et år siden (faktisk et år og en måned) besluttede jeg for at blive vegetar, hvilket betyder, at jeg ikke spiser kød. Ingen gelantine i vingummier, ingen fisk eller produkter som indeholder kød, knogler eller lignende fra dyr. Jeg spiser æg, ost og drikker mælk i små portioner, men før jeg tog beslutningen var der et par ting, jeg gerne ville have vidst, og jeg tænkte, at det skulle du vide, hvis du overvejede at blive vegetar eller veganer.


It's A Sensitive Subject To Some People for some odd reason. Some people are just willing to start an argument over anything but I've also talked to people who has started to defend themselves just because I've told them I was a vegetarian. The easiest thing to do is just to handle the situation with a shrug on the shoulders and a smile.


Det Er Et Følsomt Emne For Nogen Mennesker af en eller anden underlig grund. Nogen er bare mere villige til at starte en diskussion over alting, men jeg har også snakket med mennesker, som har følt det nødvendigt at forsvare dem selv når jeg har sagt, at jeg er vegetar. Det nemmeste er at håndtere situationen med en skuldertræk og et smil. 


You Have To Eat More than on a diet with more meat. Most of us probably know that plants and vegetables contain a lot fewer calories than meat but it surprised me how much less and therefor also how much more I had to eat to get in my requirements. It took me quite a while to get used to and honestly I think I still haven't figured it out yet cause I sometimes really don't understand whether or not I've eaten enough.

De fleste af os ved nok godt at planter og grøntsager indeholder færre kalorier end kød, men det overraskede mig hvor meget mindre, og derfor også hvor meget mere jeg skulle spise for at opnå mine behov. Det tog mig et stykke tid at vænne mig til, og ærligt så tror jeg ikke helt, jeg har det endnu, for nogen gange stiller jeg stadig spørgsmål til, om jeg har spist nok.


It's Not Hard To Get Enough Protein. The first few months I tried to track how much protein I ate through a day and honestly I ate way too much protein and very little fat. I don't think that I've eaten that much fat to be honest but when you also cut out the meat you cut out a big percentage of that too. As long as you eat beans, peas or high protein vegetables it's no problem at all.


Det Er Ikke Svært At Få Nok Protein. De første par måneder prøvede jeg at holde styr på, hvor meget protein jeg spiste igennem en dag, og ærligt så spiste jeg fór meget og meget lidt fedt. Jeg tror aldrig, at jeg har spist særlig meget fedt i min kost, men når man skærer kødet væk skærer man også en stor procentdel fedt væk. Så længe du spiser bønner, ærter og proteinindholdige grøntsager er det ikke et problem.


You'll Have To Get Used To The Jokes cause there will be a lot of them and it's always the same: "Why are you eating the animals food?" or "enjoying your rabbit food?". I probably live in one of the countries in the world with the most sarcastic humor so I knew people would make jokes about it but when you've heard the same joke several times you just have to knock it off. 


Du Er Nødt Til At Vænne Dig Til Joksene, for der kommer til at være mange af dem, og det er altid de samme: "Hvorfor spiser du dyrenes mad?" eller "nyder du din kaninføde?". Som borger i Danmark bor vi nok i et af verdens mest sarkastiske lande, så jeg vidste, at folk ville lave sjov med det, men jeg har hørt de samme jokes adskillige gange, og du er bare nødt til ikke at tænke over det.


Most People Actually Don't Mind/Offers To Make Vegetarian Food for you when you come around, or at least I've found that my friends and family do. I was positively surprised by this and I always prepared myself if I should bring something of my own but it has actually only been necessary once or twice when I think about it. I still ask people if I should bring anything but it's never a problem. 


De Fleste Mennesker Har Ikke Noget Imod/Tilbydder At Lave Vegetarisk Mad til dig, når du kommer forbi, eller i det mindste gør mine venner og familie ofte. Jeg var positivt overrasket over dette, og forberedte altid mig selv på at tage noget med, men det har faktisk kun været nødvendigt én eller to gange, når jeg tænker over det. Jeg spørger stadig folk, om jeg skal tage noget med, men det er aldrig et problem. 


Be Prepared To Ask For Special Orders whenever you're eating out at restaurants or café's. I think that people who is really allergic to something is like people switching to a plant-based diet, all of sudden you start to notice how few options there sometimes can be. Luckily most places have a vegetarian option but it's usually just one and I have asked for special orders before cause sometimes that is necessary. Sometimes I've found it easier when travelling elsewhere than Denmark.


Hver Forberedt På At Bestille Special Odrer, når du er ude og spise på restauranter eller caféer. Jeg tror, at folk som er meget allergisk overfor noget er som mennesker der skifter til en plantebaseret kost, lige pludselig ligger du mærke til, hvor få muligheder man nogen gange har. Heldigvis har mange steder vegetariske muligheder, men det er normalt bare én, og jeg har været nødt til at spørge om noget speciallavet før. Det har faktisk været nemmere for mig i udlandet end i Danmark. 


I Feel Much Healthier than when I ate meat. I never thought that going vegetarian would have a that big impact on the way I feel in my own skin but it has had. I've always had a very troublesome stomach but after mostly eating vegetables and low fat meals for over a year my stomach is never complaining after a meal (unless it contained a lot of sugar). But I also feel that I eat more varied and get more vitamins through my food than I did before. 


Jeg Føler Mig Meget Sundere, end da jeg spiste kød. Jeg tænkte aldrig at blive vegetar ville have en så stor effekt, på den måde jeg føler mig i min egen krop, men det har det. Jeg har altid haft en besværlig mave, men efter at at have spist vegetarisk og meget lidt fedt i over et år har min mave ikke klaget over et måltid (medmindre det indeholdte meget sukker). Men jeg føler også, at jeg spiser mere varieret og får flere vitaminer gennem min mad, end jeg gjorde før.
